A veteran finds stability in her new home
Single mother and children are finally able to grow together as a family
Volunteers of America helps more than 1.4 million people a year with providing the resources they need to build up their lives and reach their full potential. This organization has made the commitment to serve a susceptible group that includes the disabled, the homeless, veterans and at-risk youth. Part of its mission statement says: “Volunteers of America is a movement organized to reach and uplift all people and bring them to the knowledge and active service of God.”
People who are a part of a susceptible group often are in the situations they are in, because they don’t have anyone to rely on. Sources of help becomes extremely limited and they can’t break out of the cycle they are in.
Melissa Fernandez was one of those people. After serving in the Army for 13 years, she returned home after being honorably discharged. The physical and mental injuries and illnesses she suffered made keeping a job difficult. Melissa found herself homeless, not being able to provide her two kids with a place to live in.
After two long years of homelessness, she got a call that changed her life. Melissa was qualified to move in a two-bedroom home in Blue Butterfly Village that she had applied for. Blue Butterfly Village is a 73-unit townhouse community in California, that is subsidized for homeless families. Veterans have priority and live in 61 of the units.
Volunteers of America was able to provide the resources Melissa needed to keep moving forward.
