Words to ponder
A love song for Lucinda
By Langston Hughes
Love
Is a ripe plum
Growing on a purple tree.
Taste it once
And the spell of its enchantment
Will never let you be.
Love
Is a bright star
Glowing in far Southern skies.
Look too hard
And its burning flame
Will always hurt your eyes.
Love
Is a high mountain
Stark in a windy sky.
If you
Would never lose your breath
Do not climb too high.

From Why Do We Suffer and Where is God When We Do?
By Valerie G. Rempel, published by Herald Press
Why Do We Suffer?
It was, to paraphrase Alexander of children’s book fame, a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year. A high school friend died of cancer and another landed in the hospital with what turned out to be metastatic breast cancer. She would die the following year. A much-loved aunt succumbed to the ravages of Parkinson’s disease and died during the Christmas season. We postponed her funeral so another aunt could have surgery for her recently diagnosed cancer. My workplace was in turmoil and a friend was so angry at me that, for a short season, we could not celebrate the Lord’s Supper together. And one fall day, I received a phone call from my father telling me that he was in the hospital being diagnosed with lung cancer. And here you should imagine my stepmother’s voice in the background saying, “Don’t forget to tell her happy birthday.”
