Creating successful homeowners

Since Homewise was founded in 1986, the nonprofit organization has helped over 3,600 people buy homes. Homewise also has helped over 2,000 make energy-efficient improvements to their homes, refinanced over 600 mortgages and built more than 600 affordable homes in New Mexico.

The organization works to help people become homeowners who also improve their financial well-being and contribute to their communities.

One such homeowner was Jeanette, who learned that her landlord was selling the property she was renting. She knew that it was time to decide what the next steps were. By meeting with a Homewise home purchase advisor, she was able to determine whether she was ready to buy her own home. She was thrilled to find out she was, but the thought of leaving her community was heartbreaking. Luckily, she found a cozy house not far from her rental, and she made an offer on the house on her 48^th birthday.

Lucas and Alicia were ready to pursue homeownership and dreamed of extra rooms to start a family and a yard for their dog, Cosmo. After their dream home was snatched by a different, pre-qualified buyer, they wanted to make sure they didn’t miss another opportunity. With free financial coaching from Homewise, they were prepared and pre-qualified when that perfect house came back on the market three weeks later. Their second offer was accepted, and they moved in two months after their first Homewise visit.
